Fourth follow-up order for electric Citeas in Münster

Stadtwerke Münster (Germany) has placed a follow-up order for electric VDL Citeas with VDL Bus & Coach. This order by Stadtwerke Münster is the fourth order in a row for electric buses and consists of four VDL Citeas SLFA-180 Electric. The vehicles will be put in service on line 11 in Münster in the first half of 2020 and will replace some of the diesel buses currently used on this line.

VDL Bus & Coach is very proud of this follow-up order, particularly because it once again confirms Stadtwerke Münster's confidence in VDL Bus & Coach. Having now driven over 550,000 electric kilometres with the electric Citeas currently in operation, the day-to-day experience has been convincing enough to now place a new order for electric buses with VDL Bus & Coach. With this fourth order for VDL electric buses, Münster is also well on its way to reaching one million electric kilometres!

Electric driving in Münster
After the delivery of 3 lightweight Citeas LLE in 2013, Stadtwerke Münster placed its first order for electric Citeas for the city of Münster in 2015. This order for 5 Citeas SLF-120 Electric was, together with 8 VDL Citeas SLFA-181 Electric for Cologne, the first order for electric VDL buses in Germany. For VDL Bus & Coach this was also one of the first deliveries of electric buses in Europe. Following a nearly two-year-long test phase with the first 5 electric vehicles in connection with the SEB (Schnellladesysteme für Elektrobusse im ÖPNV – rapid charging systems for electric buses in urban and regional transport) and ZeEUS (Zero Emission Urban Bus System) projects, both Stadtwerke Münster and VDL were able to gather valuable, practical information and experience on the use of electric bus systems in an urban environment. In 2017 VDL Bus & Coach received the second order from Stadtwerke Münster, for 5 VDL Citeas SLF-120 Electric. The 2 VDL Citeas SLF-120 Electric that formed the third order will be put in service at the beginning of July. The success of the electric buses in operation in Münster is again confirmed with this fourth order. These VDL Citeas SLFA-180 Electric will be put in service in the first half of 2020, at which point there will be a total of 16 electric buses in operation in Münster, all from VDL Bus & Coach.

The four VDL Citeas SLFA-180 Electric will operate on line 11 in Münster. This 15-kilometre route runs from the Gievenbeck district via the city centre to the residential area on Mondstraße. A rapid charging station is being built to charge the buses at the Dieckmannstraße stop in Gievenbeck. The vehicles have a 2-2-2-0 door configuration and a total capacity of 45+8+1 seats and 72 standing places. The low floor construction at the entry and exit doors makes the buses easily accessible for wheelchair users and passengers with baby buggies. These four new VDL Citea Electric buses for Stadtwerke Münster are equipped with a pantograph located above the front axle. The vehicles are equipped with a high capacity 288 kWh battery pack.
