Follow-up order for additional 5 VDL Citea’s Electric buses for Stadtwerke Münster

On Tuesday 10th of October 2017, VDL Bus & Coach received the confirmation of an order for 5 additional Citea’s SLF-120 Electric buses, for Stadtwerke Münster. VDL Bus & Coach is especially proud of this follow-up order as it confirms the capabilities of electric buses in daily operation. After a test involving the first 5 electric vehicles that lasted almost two years, in the framework of the subsidised project SEB (Quick charging system for electric buses in local public transport) and ZeEUS (Zero Emission Urban Bus System), the client Stadtwerke Münster and VDL have been able to collect valuable practical information about and experience of the use of electric bus systems in an urban environment. To date, electric vehicles from VDL Bus & Coach have clocked up more than 4,500,000 real operating kilometres, on the road.
Electric mobility is becoming a key development in local public transport. Electric bus transport in greater urban districts is a key contributor to a cleaner environment, lower energy consumption and quieter, healthier living conditions.

VDL Citea Electric for Stadtwerke Münster
The Citea SLF-120 Electric vehicles for Münster come with a 2-2-0 door configuration and offer a total passenger capacity of 80 people. The low floor construction at entrance and exit doors makes the bus ideally accessible for wheelchair users and passengers with prams.
These 5 new VDL Citea Electric buses are all equipped with a pantograph system. Unlike the first 5 vehicles, the pantograph is now positioned on the front axle. This change to the pantograph position is a response from VDL Bus & Coach to recommendations from the VDV and the ISO standards. In accordance with the requirements in Münster, the vehicles will be fitted with a 180 kWh battery pack thereby further increasing the operating range and ensuring greater flexibility. The new vehicles will be equipped with a Siemens central motor, which further reduces the vehicle maintenance costs.

E-Mobility by VDL
Developments in electrical mobility are advancing at a lightning pace. The transition to zero emission local public transport not only involves buses but also all turnkey systems for public passenger transport. As market leader for electric mobility in Western Europe, VDL Bus & Coach takes its role as transition partner for the complete package of products very seriously. Zero emission buses are already operating on a daily basis in numerous cities, proof from VDL that small-scale test projects are now very much a thing of the past. Visit the exhibition ‘Busworld’ in Kortrijk, Belgium, to experience just how ‘mature’ zero emission bus operations have truly become today. VDL is happy in its role as pioneer in the transition to emission-free local public transport, and has developed a special process, that starts with a sound analysis of public transport needs. This analysis is converted in recommendations for zero emission operation, a process which is undertaken with the overall supervision of VDL, right from initial implementation through to subsequent system maintenance.

Stadtwerke Münster GmbH
Stadtwerke Münster supplies its customers with electricity, natural gas, district heating and drinking water. In addition, they transport more than 45 million passengers annually on 21 bus routes in the city. As a communal company, Stadtwerke Münster assumes responsibility for clean air policy in the city. Electrification of bus transport is therefore an integral component of the city‘s climate concept.
