VDL Bus & Coach signs fuel cell contract

On 12 November 2014, representatives of five major European bus manufacturers including VDL Bus & Coach, signed an agreement during the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking’s (FCH JU) Stakeholders Forum in Brussels. This joint ‘Letter of Understanding’ underlines the bus manufacturers' commitment to the commercialization and market introduction of electric buses with fuel cell technology in urban public transport. Fuel cell buses run on hydrogen and constitute a zero emission transport alternative because they produce no harmful emissions, as the only emission is pure water. The ‘Letter of Understanding was symbolically handed over to Olaf Scholz, First Mayor of the City of Hamburg, and Kit Malthouse, Deputy Mayor of London. Hamburg and London play a leading role in the promotion of zero emission transport systems.

VDL Bus & Coach sees a future for metropolitan electric bus transport and wants to contribute in this way to a cleaner environment, lower energy consumption and a quieter and healthier living environment. The high degree of modularity of the Citea range not only results in a tailored solution but also benefits the operator in many ways, in connection with repairs, maintenance and stocked parts for example. The ability to choose from various drive and energy storage systems, including battery packs, ensures that the most ideal and optimum combination can be selected for every deployment area, without consequences for accessibility, interior layout or comfort. The Citea range is unique in that it can be adapted to provide the optimum configuration for any operator based on their complete package of operational requirements and wishes, and it integrates seamlessly with the available infrastructure. This applies to the all-electric, hybrid and future fuel cell buses. “We believe in the electrification of urban bus systems, with attractive possibilities offered by the fuel-cell range extender and hydrogen drive lines. Modularity and reduction of the Total Cost of Ownership of a zero emission public transport system will be the main strategy of VDL Bus & Coach in the coming years,” says Rémi Henkemans, Managing Director VDL Bus & Coach bv.
